Humantay Lake: The Turquoise Jewel of the Vilcabamba Range

Humantay Lake: The Turquoise Jewel of the Vilcabamba Range
Itinerary
To witness the lake in the crisp, clear morning light before the mountain mists roll in, our expedition begins early, trading the comforts of the city for the raw majesty of the Andean highlands.
- The Drive to the Valley of the Gods Our journey begins before dawn, departing from Cusco and winding our way through the lush, agricultural valley of Limatambo. As the sun rises, the landscape dramatically transforms, revealing deep canyons and towering ridges. We make our first essential stop in the mountain village of Mollepata. Here, in the crisp morning air, we will share a hearty, energizing highland breakfast designed to give you the necessary fuel for the high-altitude trek ahead.
- Reaching Soraypampa and The Ascent Following breakfast, a scenic drive takes us up a winding dirt road to Soraypampa, the high-altitude basecamp that marks the beginning of our trek. Standing at the trailhead, you are immediately greeted by the colossal, snow-capped presence of Apu Salkantay looming in the distance. The hike to the lake is relatively short but intensely steep, cutting directly up an ancient glacial moraine. Your guide will pace the group perfectly, encouraging slow, rhythmic breathing as the air thins, and pointing out the hardy, unique alpine flora that manages to survive in this extreme environment.
- The Turquoise Revelation The final crest over the rocky moraine delivers one of the most spectacular reveals in the Andes. Suddenly, the landscape opens up to reveal Humantay Lake resting quietly at the base of a sheer, terrifyingly beautiful glacier. The contrast is staggering: the brilliant, almost unnatural turquoise of the water set against the stark, blinding white of the hanging ice and the dark, jagged rock of the mountain face. You will have ample time to walk along the shoreline, find a quiet spot to rest, and absorb the absolute pristine silence of the high mountains.
- The Andean Ritual: Honoring the Apus At the water's edge, your guide will share the spiritual significance of this location. In Andean cosmology, this lake is the tear of the mountain god. You will be invited to participate in a small, ancient ritual—building an apacheta (a carefully balanced cairn of stones) or offering a kintu (three perfectly arranged coca leaves) to the lake and the mountain, leaving a gesture of gratitude and respect for the earth (Pachamama).
- The Descent and the Highland Feast After capturing unforgettable photographs and letting your heart rate settle, we begin the steep descent back to the Soraypampa basecamp. Going down requires careful footing, but the physical exertion is much lower, allowing you to fully enjoy the sweeping views of the valley below. Once we return to our transport, we head back to our dining spot for a deeply satisfying, hot buffet lunch, celebrating the physical achievement of the day before we begin the relaxing drive back to Cusco.
What Not Includes?
- Community Entrance Fee: The local environmental and access fee required by the community of Mollepata (paid directly in cash at the checkpoint).
- Horse Rental: For those who find the steep incline too taxing, local horsemen offer rides up to the final crest. This is completely optional and must be negotiated and paid in cash directly to the locals.
- Gratuities: Optional tips to show gratitude to your guide, driver, and the local cooks.
- Extra Snacks and Hydration: Specialized energy gels, extra chocolate, or bottled water for the trail.
Recomendations
- Respect the Altitude: The lake sits at approximately 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level. You must spend at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before undertaking this expedition.
- Master the Art of Layering: The morning drive is freezing, the steep hike will make you sweat profusely, and the wind coming off the glacier at the lake will chill you to the bone. Wear a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece, and a thick, windproof outer shell that you can easily remove and put back on.
- Proper Mountain Footwear: The trail is a mix of loose dirt, sharp gravel, and slippery rocks. Broken-in hiking boots with excellent grip and ankle support are highly recommended to prevent injury.
- Aggressive Sun Protection: High-altitude sun is unforgiving, and the reflection off the lake and glacier amplifies the UV rays. Apply a high-SPF sunscreen, wear polarized sunglasses, and bring a hat.
- Bring Local Currency: Keep small bills (Soles) on hand for the community entrance fee, use of rustic restrooms at the basecamp, or if you decide you need the assistance of a horse during the ascent.
